GRATITUDE (Chapter 9, Gratitude and Generosity)

Gratitude is a powerful instrument for change. It is one of the most direct ways to build up your “prosperity account” and combat money anxiety disorder because it opens you up to become an agent for generosity. The simple act of showing up and being present to yourself and the world, engaging in your community and giving back, and offering kindness and support are the pillars upon which we build our own spiritual bank accounts.

At the other end of the spectrum lies dissatisfaction with what we have, accompanied by avarice. We always want more things. Consumerism encourages us to focus on what we don’t have rather than what we do have. As a result, we end up with an emotional handicap. The prime example of this is the materialistic person who believes pleasure and happiness can only be derived from money, status, and possessions. The research shows that such a belief is ill founded and that in many cases the very opposite is actually true. A focus on material wealth is associated with compulsive spending, envy, and low self-esteem. Individuals whose primary focus is affluence and materialism are less satisfied with their life as a whole, tend to experience a higher degree of anxiety and depression, and have a lower sense of wellbeing and more behavioral and physical problems.
